Scooter Guy (The Best Commute Ever)

One morning, Feb 5th 2008 to be exact, I took my scooter to work, as I often do.

This morning, Broadway was barricaded due to the Giants Parade celebrating their Superbowl win.

I entered the barricade at the end of Duane St, turned right onto Broadway, as the sidewalks were already crowded with fans, even though the parade didn’t start until 11.30.

This was great, I thought, had the whole of Broadway to myself, where it’s normally jammed.

After scooting for a block, some guy in the crowd takes notice of me and says “Look, Scooter Guy!” as if I were part of some pre-parade entertainment.

Within seconds, a mass crescendo of cheers arose from the crowds on both sides of Broadway, as the first guys’ initial notice spread like an aural wildfire. “Scoooooter Guuuuy!!!!” I was now the sole participant and star of my own personal parade, down the Canyon of Heroes.

After a few blocks, the scenario repeated itself: “Look, Scooter Guy!”, big crescendo of cheers. This phenomena repeated itself every few blocks, like a compressed sort of Groundhog Day; a Groundhog Minute, yeah, that’s it.

By the second occurrence, I warmed up to my role as Grand Marshall On Wheels by zig-zagging across the road, waving to the crowd. They got more excited. At Warren Street, I high-fived someone across the barrier. People starting shooting photos. By Park Place, even a cop or two waved at me.  At Barclay Street, I stopped & turned on my phone camera. I wanted to shoot a fresh crowd just as they noticed me. It meant I had to learn how to scoot-and-shoot on the fly. The results will be shown here soon.

The next day, they were waiting for me all over again ;-)

    Thanx, Jeff.

    Re MSCDemocracy: my intent was to create a classic protest song a la Phil Ochs, Dylan, therefore it’s gotta be acoustic. I mixed it up a bit w/some overdriven guitar in starting in the 2nd verse.

    But, yeah, a punk versjon could also do the song right.

    I love ‘recasting’ songs; we regular perform ‘reggified’ versione of pop classics, like ‘What So Funny..’, ‘Don’t Lemme Be Misunderstood,’ et. al.

    Thanx for commenting.;
